How to Choose a Hamster
54Hi! Before you read this article please remember that I suggest you get your hamsters from a responsible breeder rather than a pet shop. Are thinking about getting a hamster soon? Well I'm going to tell you how to choose a healthy happy pet so you can have a long friendship with your new buddy. When you arrive in the pet shop or breeder's you may see a few or may hamsters. Look at all of the hamsters. Even if you think one's ugly it may be the healthiest. If any of the hamsters seem to have dull eyes they are most likely very sick and should be out of the running. Next look at the hamsters left, do any of them seem lethargic? [Don't be mistaken though, hamsters wake up around 6PM so if you arrive earlier than that they may still be sleepy] If so, they they may be sick and should be eliminated. So by now you should be down to a few hamsters. Is there a hamster that you particularly like? if so then ask if you can pick it up. Feel it's belly area, are there any bumps? If there are then he may have tumors I would not suggest getting this hamster. Do the eyes still look bright? Does the hamster seem curious and sniffing you? If the eyes are still bright and the hamsters seem alert, you can move on to the final step. Ask a worker or the breeder about the hamster's past, if the parents had any health problems, and if the hamster was housed with males. If the hamster aced the background check, congratulations, you got a hamster!

Good advice - when it comes to hamsters all I consider is Give me one that doesn't bite! :-)
Years ago I raised hamsters and I never knew a female one that wouldn't take my finger off so I am surprised no one mentions that, and some of the males do too. I picked beautiful ones and bred them, plus different type rabbits and guinea pigs, goats, doves...well it was a lot of fun. Welcome to hubs!
Actually some of the best hamsters are biters in the beginning. My best hamster ever was the worst biter hen i got her. jackie gender doesnt matter I have had nippy males and females its the individual in that sense my male is FAR more likly to bite than my female
